2006 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable. silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever. There isn't a dog among them. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Lt2 and lt3 option packages add yet more equipment, but both price and specific content depend on cab style, driveline, and other factors. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim. a hybrid option 1,500) is available in several states. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs. silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado. silverado's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl. optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier. the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous generation, which allows the engineers to reduce the gaps between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lights on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section 245-percent stiffer than that of the suv. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous generation, which allowed the engineers to reduce the gaps between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. This stiffer frame also allows suspension components to be designed for improved ride and handling characteristics as well as allowing enhanced aerodynamics and fuel efficiency. the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear design provides enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shock absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt, ls and lt come with what chevrolet calls the pure pickup interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior. the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior features large switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky gloves. the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. Revised engines improve fuel economy and increase power. introductionthe 2013 chevrolet camaro is in its fifth-generation, last redesigned for the 2010 model year. For 2013, the camaro remains relatively unchanged, but upper trim levels do get chevrolet's mylink touchscreen interface, with optional gps navigation. A new race-inspired 1le performance package on ss models equipped with the manual transmission includes a sportier suspension, high-performance summer tires and unique gearing. 2013 camaro ls and camaro lt models come with a 3. 6-liter v6 that makes 323 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional. In terms of power, the v6 can pretty much pass for a v8, a bonus for the price. The v6 on 2013 models revs to 7200 rpm. engine modifications introduced for 2012 help with power and efficiency, and include a revised cylinder head design with integrated exhaust manifolds, improved intake ports, larger intake valves, longer-duration camshafts, a composite intake manifold, new fuel pump, optimized-flow fuel injectors, cylinder block enhancements, stronger and lighter connecting rods, and a cleaned up camshaft cap and throttle body. a camaro ls achieves a fair epa fuel economy rating for its class, at 19/30 mpg city/highway with the automatic transmission. camaro convertibles are equipped like the coupes but feature a power soft top fitted with acoustical foam in the headliner to minimize noise with the top up. Of torque with a 6-speed automatic, or 426 hp and 420 lb.-ft. With a 6-speed manual gearbox. The ss uses firmer shocks, springs and anti-roll bars than the v6 models, but the ride doesn't suffer for it. It's a fantastic performance car, great for track events or autocrossing. Yet it can cruise comfortably around town and on the highway as a daily driver. The suspension does not punish the driver on rough roads. It's a very impressive machine. we found the handling, ride and brakes to be excellent in both the camaro lt with the v6 and the camaro ss with the big v8, although the ss suspension is stiffer and its 20-inch tires are firmer. The result is a top that appears smooth, taut and carefully tailored, while retaining the sleek roofline of the coupe. interiorthe cabin of the chevrolet camaro is oriented more around style than function. The standard cloth bucket seats are good, although the bolstering isn't fully there for hard cornering. The low bolsters make getting in and out of the camaro easier. Excellent leather upholstery is available in black, gray, beige and two-tone inferno orange, and interior materials are good. the front seat slides 8. 5 inches and the steering wheel tilts and telescopes, so drivers of all sizes will fit. Updated styling and interior. introductionthe chevrolet traverse is a large crossover suv able to haul a truckload of cargo or up to eight people. Built more like a car than a truck, traverse uses front-wheel drive and is much lighter than a tahoe. Traverse was launched as an all-new model for the 2009 model year. we found traverse to be an excellent family vehicle. It is the modern station wagon. underway, traverse feels more like a big sedan than a truck. It rides comfortably and is much more stable than truck-based suvs, which tend to lean in corners and bound over undulations. The steering is direct and responsive, very light in effort, and the brakes are easy to modulate for nice smooth stops. Drivers moving out of a compact or midsize suv will find it bulky when parking, while folks trading down from full-size truck-based suvs will find traverse surpassingly carlike and nimble. It can tow a bass boat but isn't equipped for heavy trailering. fuel economy for the 2013 chevrolet traverse is an epa-estimated 17/24 mpg city/highway with front-wheel drive, and 16/23 with all-wheel drive. The v6 delivers strong horsepower though it does not have the torque of a v8. Room in the first and second rows is plentiful, and the third row is bigger than most and is even plausible for adults. Cloth or leather, the front seats are comfortable and supportive. The second- and third-row seats fold flat to open up a generous cargo area. Even with all the seats up, there is enough room behind the third row for a week's worth of groceries, and an available power liftgate makes access easy. the controls are easy to reach and operate. The rearview camera, which comes standard, makes backing this big vehicle up easier and safer. More stylish and thirsty than a minivan, more efficient than a truck-based suv, it's kind of like a big family sedan with a glassed-in cargo bay in back. It's built using unit-body construction similar to that of a car rather than bolting the body to a heavy truck frame. Also, it's a front-wheel-drive platform. Traverse is longer but a finger-width narrower than the chevrolet tahoe full-size suv. up front, the traverse features the horizontal-dominant chevrolet grille. The headlights start next to the grille and wrap into the front fenders. Horizontal fog lights mirror the headlights about six inches lower. A black air dam below the grille gives the front end a dark lower face. A peak at the center of the hood continues down through the grille and fascia, adding a touch of character. from the side, the traverse appears to have short overhangs for an suv. The window line rises to the rear and that angle increases at the rear windows. A character line is located about a third of the way up each door, and the black front fascia is picked up along the sides by black plastic over the rocker panels. Large wheels and tires keep everything in proportion. Up top, the traverse has optional roof rails and an available two-panel sunroof with a fixed rear panel and an opening front panel. at the rear, the traverse features dark tailgate glass that dips down toward the center. The tailgate lifts up and does not have a separate opening glass. New tail lights use inset clear-lens elements to channel the camaro's tail lights, and the new license brow give it a trimmer look. The total design is well thought out, smooth and stylish. interiorinside, the chevy traverse makes great use of its best-in-class space. It's a good blend of people and cargo hauling. the front seats are comfortable and supportive, whether trimmed in cloth or leather, with lots of head room and leg room. the second-row bench seat fits three adults easily and there is plenty of head and leg room. With the second-row captain's chairs, there is a handy walkthrough to the third row. Three children can ride comfortably in the third row, and there is also enough head and leg room for two adults to fit back there. Adults won't be comfortable during long trips, though, because of the low height of the seat cushions. cargo space is plentiful. Traverse is big by class standards, so it has more cargo space behind the third-row seat (24. 4 cubic feet) than most crossovers. Underneath the floor is a handy, though shallow storage bin. With the second and third rows folded down, cargo volume is an impressive 116. 4 cubic feet (for comparison, that's seven more than a chevy tahoe and 32 less than a honda odyssey, which are both shorter). Those two rear rows fold easily, each with the flick of a lever, creating a nearly flat load floor. A strap on each section of the split third-row bench makes it easy to pull the seatbacks upright from the tailgate area. An available power rear liftgate also eases access to the cargo area. getting in and out is easy, again the traverse sits lower than traditional truck-based suvs and higher than vans. Still, the driver is perched higher than in a car and therefore has a clear view of the road ahead. Visibility to the front is generally good, but the traverse is bigger than it feels, so it can be tough to see over the driver's right shoulder and objects immediately behind might be hidden from view. Wide-angle elements in the outside mirrors and a backup camera help. up front, the driver is surrounded by an attractively designed dashboard that has nice graining and has been updated with softer, more inviting textures and finished. The instrument cluster has two deep-set pods with electroluminescent gauges on a black background. It's easy to read and never washes out in bright sun.
