2011 nissan murano review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The world's first suv convertible. introductionstructurally, the new nissan murano crosscabriolet is far more than a murano crossover suv with the top chopped off, but basically it's not. Introduced at the la auto show november 2010, it was met with skepticism and kidding, for solving a problem nobody knew they had. The story goes that the crosscabriolet was the brainchild of nissan's dynamic president, carlos ghosn; the idea was met with disbelief, but what the president wants, the president gets.  so here it is, and only time will tell if it's too far out there, or if it's the reinvention of versatility, as nissan marketing now calls it.  it can't be denied that some people actually do need an suv convertible. Edgy fender flares front and rear and a gap for off-road ground clearance over the tires make the crosscabriolet statement: take me to the boonies, i'm ready. The look is especially striking when the top is down. The nissan design team wanted to express a feeling of sky and earth, and they have.  two of the murano doors have been sacrificed in order to keep the roofless chassis structure strong. The remaining two doors have been widened nearly 8 inches to allow easier entry and exit to the rear seat. Using aluminum and magnesium rails, it goes up or down in 25 seconds. There's a unique narrow skylight that runs the width of the top, and is located just over the rear glass, filtering light onto the heads of the rear passengers and making the interior feel more open.  when the top is down, the tall windscreen and the car's high beltline make passengers feel confined and protected. Even with the windows lowered at 75 mph, there isn't much buffeting. Raise the windows and it's whisper quiet with nothing but the sky above.  the overall lines of the interior, including wonderfully comfortable seats, are sculpted and curved, subtly, so it works. However legroom in the rear has been lost, as space had to be made for the top when it's down. It's a pretty slim 32. 7 inches now. Cargo space is slim, as well.  the crosscabriolet uses the exceptional nissan 3. 5-liter dohc v6 engine, with all-wheel drive and a second-generation cvt transmission with good logic control, but no manual mode. The ride is very smooth. We love this engine. Regardless of whatever ribbing nissan has been taking for solving a problem that nobody had, when a carmaker comes up with a car that everybody looks at and smiles at, they feel they've done something right.  besides, some people actually do need an suv convertible. There's a new front fascia, and also everything from the reinforced a pillars back, especially the doors. (the murano also features new styling for 2011.)  two of the murano doors have been sacrificed in order to keep the roofless chassis structure of the crosscabriolet strong. The remaining two doors have been widened by 7. 9 inches, in order to allow easier entry and exit to the rear seat. There are no b-pillars.  the sides of the car curve upward into the shape of a small j, where they meet the low-profile roofline. J-motion waistline, nissan calls it, the shape adding both roof height and trunk space. The feature is more pronounced with the top down, as it encompasses the heads of the rear passengers and seats them in a secure small well, without blocking their visibility. Sporty-looking brushed aluminum rollbars rise behind their heads, and pop up another six inches if triggered by rollover sensors.  the pop-up rollbars will smash the skylight if that happens. It's a horizontal slit over the rear passenger's shoulders that opens things up and raises the roof, at least in the occupants' minds.  edgy fender flares front and rear, and a gap for off-road ground clearance over the tires, make the crosscabriolet statement: take me to the boonies, i'm ready. The look is especially striking when the top is down. The nissan design team wanted to express a feeling of 'sky and earth,' and they have.  boomerang taillamps are traced from the nissan 370z and maxima, and split five-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels finish off the styling. interiorthe crosscabriolet interior begins where the murano top of the line interior ends, says nissan. The forward view of the rear seat passengers is helped by sloping shoulders of the front seats. The trim looks nice in half-matte chrome finish, which we usually just describe as brushed aluminum. There's just enough wood trim, light or darker, on the console and front-door armrests.  from the high driver's seating position, it feels like what it is: a big suv with no roof. Visibility out the rear with the top up is pinched a bit, but sideview mirror visibility is good. The instruments look clean and sharp in white on black, and all the buttons and knobs on the dashboard and center console are good and functional.  a 7-inch display screen is used by the rearview camera whenever backing up. The rest of the time it's used by the navigation system, which comes with xm traffic.  with the top down, the interior space is sheltered from the wind. 'confined and protected,' nissan says, describing the feeling. We drove the crosscabriolet with the windows up, down, half up, and front-rear up-down, and were sheltered all ways. So no screen or shield seems to be needed, behind the rear seats or at the top of the windshield. Turbulence is kept out of the car by the tall windshield, high beltline, and high rear shoulders from the j-motion design. Conversations between driver and passenger are easy. We didn't have any passengers in the rear seat, but even they should be able to talk to the driver without having to shout into the wind. Even with the windows down at 75 mph, there wasn't much buffeting. When we raised the windows, it got whisper quiet even at that speed.  those backseat passengers are positioned 3. 6 inches closer to the front seat, than in the murano suv. Rear legroom has been lost, down to a slim 32. 7 inches from 36. 3 inches, to create storage space for the soft top. The good news is that there's tons of hip room with the rear bench reduced from three seats to two, with a console and two fixed cupholders in between.  the front seatbacks flop forward and the seats slide forward, to enable entry and exit for the back seat. It's not the slickest method we've come across, but it works.  with the top up, there's good trunk room of 12. 3 cubic feet. When the top is down it rides on a shelf in the back, so trunk space then gets slashed to 7. 6 cubic feet. Cargo space is not the crosscabriolet's strong point.  the quality cloth top with fabric liner comes in black or beige, and looks sleek with its low profile. All-new models are among the best of the full-size suvs. introductionthere have been better times for full-size sport utility vehicles. Faced with rising gas prices, eco-protests and nervous insurance underwriters, some shoppers have turned elsewhere in their search for family-size transport.  but for others, nothing can take the place of a large, powerful and roomy suv, especially those who need to tow and haul. It's for these faithful that gmc intends the mostly all-new 2007 yukon and yukon denali.  inside, everything's new. Seats are lighter, more comfortable. The dash is seriously simplified, with major reductions in confusing knobs, buttons and displays. The interior styling is refreshingly elegant, hinting at aspirations for entry-luxury status.  an equally new exterior wraps around that delightful interior. The re-styled front end remains true to the gmc trademark shapes and geometric but with a thoroughly modern flavor. Sides shorn of overbearing cladding add lightness to an otherwise fairly substantial presence. Optional, 20-inch polished wheels add a touch of high fashion trendiness.  the 2007 yukon is three inches longer than last year's model, nearly all of which goes to added front seat legroom and cargo area, but the wheelbase is the same length.  the popular 5. 3-liter v8 engine gets a moderate boost in power and, perhaps more important, an ingenious system that shuts down half the cylinders under light load, improving fuel economy by one or two miles per gallon. The base 4. 8-liter v8 gets a slight boost in power, too. At the top of the line, the luxurious yukon denali boasts a new 6. 2-liter v8 generating 380 horsepower with a new six-speed automatic.  the yukon seats six to nine passengers and is rated to tow up to 7700 pounds when properly equipped, enough to tow cars, boats and horses. Although the 2007 models are nearly three inches longer than their predecessors, the quieter, calmer surface planes diminish the perception of that extended length. Remarkably tight tolerances between body panels invite comparisons with the highest quality imports.  the one-piece, softer-look front end presents a friendlier, more welcoming face but without forfeiting the yukon's presence. Large headlight housings promise good vision. The trademark grille and lower air intake ensure good breathing. A more sharply raked windshield eases movement through the air.  tall, symmetrical side glass fits flush with surrounding body panels. Door handles bridging deep recesses make for easy gripping in all seasons. Squared-off wheel wells carry forward a yukon signature styling cue but, frankly, yearn for larger wheels and more substantial rubber. Save on the yukon denali, that is, which rides on 20-inch, chromed aluminum wheels wearing low profile, blackwall tires.  as inspired as the yukon's overall new look is, the back end is decidedly less so. Then again, a family vehicle that has to accommodate up to nine people and haul their cargo doesn't leave stylists much leeway for creativity. Thus, the broad, mostly flat, almost vertical tailgate in between tall, narrow taillights. The independently hinged rear window is a nice touch, permitting easy loading of grocery bags and such. interiorwhile the exterior design of the new yukon is a great leap forward, the remake of the interior borders on revolutionary. Just by the measure of how many buttons and knobs there aren't, the '07 yukon reflects a radical re-thinking by the people in charge of deciding how occupants will relate to their immediate surroundings.  topping the list is the re-positioning of the dash. In fact, we think it's a friendlier, slicker and more integrated assemblage of gauges, display screens, touch pads and control panels than those in either the range rover or the new mercedes-benz gl450, both priced substantially higher than the yukon models, including the denali. The gauge cluster is more informative, reporting via secondary analog dials powertrain data many others leave to warning lights or bury in scrollable information displays.  the fit between panels and coverings is impressive, with tight tolerances. Leather surfaces feel expensive, if not luxurious. Less impressive is the finish of some of the hard plastic surfaces, which look better than they feel. The headliner is a woven fabric that looks and feels like mouse fur.  the design of the dash gives the driver an expansive view out the windshield, adding to the feeling of being above it all. Visibility is good all around, although the imposing c-pillar (the post between the rear side door and the rear quarter panel,) does nothing to reduce the large side mirrors' blind spot. Along the same lines, the third row seat blocks the lower third of the rear window; folding the third row down eliminates this.  the redesigned seats are refreshing. The seat belts are mounted to the b-pillar, a nice improvement over the awkward seat-mounted belts used on previous models. The design of the new belts should also offer impr. Solid truck priced to sell. introductionthe 2006 chevy silverado is the last of its generation. An all-new generation of trucks is being introduced for 2007. So look for deals on the outgoing 2006 classic versions. The 2006 silverado rides well and handles well. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails provide a strong, rigid platform. It is, as the advertising tagline says, like a rock. Heated seats, a bose stereo, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado comfortable and enjoyable.  silverado benefitted from some significant revisions for 2005. Lower-profile tires on 17-inch wheels provided better handling than before. A gas/electric hybrid option promised lower operating cost with v8 performance. More minor changes for 2005 included dual electric cooling fans, which are quieter and more efficient than the engine-driven fan used previously; while aerodynamic refinements to the front end and running boards reduced wind noise and promised a slight improvement in fuel economy. Since then, ford has introduced an all-new f-150, dodge has re-engineered the ram, nissan has rolled out the appropriately named titan, and toyota has joined the fray with the biggest tundra ever. There isn't a dog among them. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Full-width fleetside beds are standard, but retro sportside beds are offered for selected models. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,073 pounds with 2wd, 2,766 pounds with 4wd, and tows 10,200 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500.  standard equipment on all silverado models, even the most basic w/t (work truck), are air conditioning, am/fm stereo, tilt steering, a chromed front bumper, painter rear step bumber, and 17-inch painted steel wheels.  moving up to ls trim (starting at $19,725) adds cloth instead of vinyl upholstery, a cd player, and an expanded list of options. Ls crew cabs 24,615) come with the 4. 8-liter v8 and automatic. Silverado lt (starting at $23,000) is more luxurious, with upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the crew cab version 28,165) comes with more, including an upgraded six-speaker stereo. The 5. 3-liter v8 is standard on lt crew cabs. Lt2 and lt3 option packages add yet more equipment, but both price and specific content depend on cab style, driveline, and other factors. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; 20-inch wheels and tires; full-time all-wheel drive; a lower, wider stance; and special exterior and interior trim.  a hybrid option 1,500) is available in several states. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Late in the model year, extended cabs and crew cabs will offer a power sunroof 795). A passenger-sensing system automatically deactivates the passenger-side front air bag under certain conditions to protect children. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes (abs) on all models. The silverado shares its bold design cues with the avalanche, the trailblazer suv, and the mid-size colorado pickup. The silverado looks more conteporary than the relatively conservative suburban and tahoe suvs.  silverado's headlights angle down at the top like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this is smoothly integrated into the front end, along with spaces for fog lamps and recessed tow hooks. The flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue the aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado.  silverado's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the woods and in the city. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. All fleetside boxes measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings.  a pro-tec composite box is available for silverado 1500 extended cab short-box models. Pro-tec is a nearly indestructible material that's lighter and stronger than steel. It never rusts and it resists dents. It can support a lot more weight than a steel tailgate. interiorinside, the silverado is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models capacity for six people. It's split 40/20/40, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. There's lots of head room and plenty of leg room, hip room, and shoulder room. The standard bench is available in cloth or vinyl.  optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking up the dry cleaning easier.  the instrument panel features a large speedometer and tachometer. Smaller gauges to the right display oil pressure, water temperature, fuel quantity, and battery charge. Hd models with the heavy-duty trailering package come with a transmission temperature gauge on the left. All use highly legible white-on-black graphics. 2013 ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. In fact, the sheetmetal is all the same and surface changes are minor. However, most of what lies beneath and bookends that sheetmetal is new or revised for 2013.  the ram 1500, considered a half-ton, can carry loads of stuff and can tow trailers similar to what the competition will. At introduction, the 2013 ram gets bragging rights for best fuel economy. The engine is new only to ram, already used in chrysler group's jeeps, vans and cars. Ram hfe is aimed at high fuel economy: ram hfe gets an epa-rated 18/25 mpg city/highway with v6 and 8-speed automatic.  also significant news for 2013, and a first in pickups, is an 8-speed automatic transmission from german manufacturer zf. It is standard with the v6 and will be available on the 5. 7-liter v8 by calendar year 2013. The air suspension is available on any model except the new ram hfe fuel economy special, which includes automatic start/stop engine operation and a bed cover.  other changes for 2013 include electric-assist steering, more sophisticated electrical systems, active grille shutters, projector and led lights on higher-line versions, revised cabin materials and dashboards, a lighter frame and box supports, more aluminum suspension components, central locking system that includes tailgate and rambox compartments, low rolling resistance tires (for fuel economy), keyless entry/start, power sliding defrostable rear window, power folding mirrors and rain-sensing wipers.  on the outside, ram continues with imposing stature. Like many dodge cars, the ram's front end has a forward tilt, but it remains very aerodynamic. Detailing for 2013 lowered the coefficient of drag (one aspect of total aero resistance) from 0. 386 to 0. 360.  the ram is a conventional full-size pickup truck, but it differs in rear suspension and powertrains from all its competitors: primarily ford f-150 and the chevrolet silverado/gmc sierra twins, and to a lesser extent the nissan titan and toyota tundra. Though it varies by region there are 10 ram 1500 nameplates.  brand loyalty in pickup trucks makes some sports rivalries look like civilized debate, and many will recommend only one despite the fact that there are no bad pickups. Shopping is made more difficult by so-called competitive comparisons we've seen online that imply drum brakes are better than disc brakes (we disagree) or 300 horsepower is superior to 400 pound-feet of torque (ditto). Some of these, such as big horn and lone star, are primarily cosmetic and packaging and available only in certain regions. Note ram terminology can be confusing: some 'long' and 'short' beds are the same length, depending on cab, so shop by tape measure, not ram's labels. There is no tradesman 1500 hd for 2013. (ram heavy duty 2500 and 3500 pickups are covered in a separate review.)  ram tradesman, slt, and outdoorsman are available in all body styles; all others are restricted to certain cabs and/or bed lengths.  the 4. 7-liter v8 and 6-speed automatic are standard on tradesman and optional on slt. The v6 and 8-speed automatic are standard on hfe and slt models, optional on tradesman. The 5. 7-liter hemi v8 and 6-speed automatic are optional on tradesman and slt, and standard on everything else. No manual transmissions are offered.  ram tradesman models are workhorses with standard vinyl floor, manual windows and gray vinyl 40/20/40 bench seat. Options include chrome wheels and trim, fog lamps, bed cover, uconnect 5. 0 with bluetooth, cd player, backup camera, sliding rear window, power and trailer mirrors, carpeting, cloth seats, block heater, 32-gallon fuel tank and air suspension. Sport includes the 5. 7-liter hemi, slate-gray contrast-stitched bucket seats, body-color bumpers, fog lamps, on-demand 4wd and 20-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. The sport r/t regular cab 2wd short bed gets a 4. 10:1 rear axle and 285/45r22 tires on polished aluminum wheels but will still tow 5050 pounds.

A 3. 08:1 axle ratio and fuel saver mode is standard with the 5. 3-liter v8 for improved fuel economy, resulting in 15 mpg city/21 mpg highway for 2wd models. There is e85 flexfuel capability on the 4. 8-liter, 5. 3-liter, and 6. 2-liter engines. Variable valve timing on the 4. 8-liter and 5. 3-liter engines improves fuel economy. A six-speed automatic transmission is on regular cab and extended cab models with the 5. 3-liter v8. Usb connectivity is on all except the base radios. Xfe versions feature aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. The short bed (5-foot, 8-inch) is the only bed available on the crew cab.  five suspensions are available: z83 is the standard setup designed for a smooth ride; z85 is a little firmer for enhanced handling and towing; z71 is for off-road driving and includes 18-inch wheels; z60 is for maximum street performance and includes 20-inch wheels; nht is for maximum towing capacity (bigger rear axle with locking differential, hd cooling, and so forth) and includes high-capacity rear springs as well as all-terrain tires.  option prices vary by trim level and body style. We think it's quite attractive.  a raked windshield (angled at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck quiet on the inside and contribute to fuel efficiency. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and epa highway ratings of 20 miles per gallon or better.  the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlights sporting the latest reflector optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lights.  the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlights within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells.  the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lights on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares.  built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup gets a unique rear suspension and a frame section 245-percent stiffer than that of the suv. The current silverado chassis is far more rigid than that of the previous generation, which allows the engineers to reduce the gaps between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. This stiffer frame also allows suspension components to be designed for improved ride and handling characteristics as well as allowing enhanced aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.  the front suspension uses coil-over shock absorbers (rather than torsion bars) and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member to provide enhanced control and feedback. The silverado benefits from a rear axle design featuring shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control than that of the previous-generation models. interiorthe silverado wt, ls and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior.  the pure pickup interior is more driver and work oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior features large switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky gloves.  the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash.  xm satellite radio with current traffic conditions and bluetooth may be ordered, or alternately, onstar 8. 0 with destination download and turn-by-turn navigation. We like both.  extended cab models feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear-seat bottoms can be easily folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. It's a smooth, cohesive design.
